Up river

I'm getting a lot of mileage out of my climb up Paku.
Here we're looking in almost the opposite direction from yesterday's pic, up the Tairua river. Pauanui, purpose built as a holiday town is on the left, and part of Tairua, which has a rather longer and more mixed heritage is on on the right. The harbour itself is mostly pretty muddy and shallow - it's about half an hour away from full tide here.

Sort of. My parents bought a place here when I was about 7 or 8, as a holiday home. They're both teachers, retired now, so we spent all of the long school holidays and term breaks down here.
I suppose I've been kicking around here on and off for 25 years or so. It's probably the place that I've got the longest connection to.

If the memories and the ambiance are as good as the scenery, it must be pretty close to paradise for you.

I enjoyed it more as a kid - as a teenager it was harder to make friends just for the summer, and I was often quite lonely.
Now, it's a great place to hide from the world for a while.
