This is something I hadn't seen before. The blessing of the boats at Island Bay, where a procession of boats, mostly fishing boats owned by families of Italian heritage sail out around the island and back in past a boat full of Catholic clergy for a ceremonial sprinkling.

In other news, I picked u[p a flyer for a Shodokan Aikido class. It might be time to go back...

The blessing of the boats is a custom in Castletownbere too. That being the Irish town in the far southwest of the island where my mother's mother came from. I suppose that when you regularly weather storms at sea, you want every bit of divine help you can muster.

It is, I suspect, a custom from a wide variety of sea-faring communities. I know of two in (relatively) nearby communities, one a fishing fleet, the other a sponge diver fleet.

And yes, as Bill says, those as go down to the sea in ships (boats even) want all the good vibes they can get.
