Getting back into the habit

of getting veges at the market. Second time in two weeks. Strawberries are in season, but small onions of decent quality are rare. I could get large ones, but I dislike having half a cut onion sitting in the fridge, so I try and get single-serving sized ones to start with.

In other news, I think I need to take a media vacation. The pre-election coverage is just making me furious and miserable by turns.

That's a beautiful selection of produce. Also, a really good price for the apples!

Apples are out of season too - they will have been stored in a chiller for up to 6 months.

The ridiculous thing is you can buy NZ Braeburns in the supermarket here (in the UK), now, next to all of the fresh Kent apples.

That's why they're cheap. The quality is really not there. Strawberries and asparagus, on the other hand...

At least they are cheap. Sometimes you pay over the odds for low-quality, out-of-season produce.

You can keep your strawberries and asparagus, I have cavolo nero.

I can buy Braeburns at my grocery store too. They're next to the apples from Virginia, just south of us. They are a bit more expensive, at roughly a dollar a pound more.

Aren't you making super-big portions to feed the Youth of Today? Can't you leave a poor single girl with an aversion to being up early on Sundays a little onion or six?

Wrong season for small onions - we've got them here though!
