Grandeur and Frivolity, backstage

A fundraising event for the Historical Arts Trust, Clarissa Dunn and Leimomi Oakes presented a talk on life at the court of the Sun King, illustrated with live music, period dance and costume. Leimomi invited me along to photograph the proceedings, stitch up bits of hem and lace the odd set of stays.

I have never seen spiral lacing before! I've always used back and forth... does it slip over time as worn? I usually have to lace mine in two sections, The top tighter and the bottom looser.

I was going to reply then LJ went down for the best part of a day...
All I knew is that we use spiral for stays and criss-cross for Victorian corsets, so I asked the local expert. She says "Criss cross wasn’t used for structural lacing until the 19th century. You see it used decoratively across stomachers in the 18th century, but there isn’t a single extent garment or painting from pre 1810ish (have to check on the exact date) that utilised criss-cross lacing for actual tightening."

I haven't noticed any problems with slipping. You could try it and see if it works.

It just wasn't something I'd thought of! Then again, I've known that there are different ways of doing shoes even...

That's cool. I will have to try it!

Is that Leimomi with the blonde curls and feathers, and the maroon bodice?

It must have been quite the event.

No, that's the mezzo-soprano Bianca. And yes, she did sing wearing the stays, although they weren't laced as tightly as they could have been. Leimomi is in the blue petticoat in the bottom shot.
