In the dunes

"I'm sure I left that pyrate captain around here somewhere..."

In other news, if anybody is worried about the recent LJ DDOS outages and would like a backup Dreamwidth account, I think I have a handful of invite codes available. Leave a comment if you'd like one. I'm dianavilliers over there too and I crosspost pretty much everything to both journals.

Beautiful!

I have a new steampunk coat pattern... I just wish I could sew!

What pattern? My SOP is to follow the instructions, and when I hit a bit I don't understand, google it. I haven't had too many complete failures.

Oh Horrors!
I don't even know how to use a sewing machine!

I can bead, embroider, embelish just about anything.
Can't sew two pieces together to save my life.

Heh. You'll be doing a lot of googling then. Do you have a sewing machine?

If you want to learn machine-sewing I'd suggest a nightclass at a highschool until you have the basics, and I've also heard of experienced seamstresses who run regular workshop-like classes where you bring your own project and they're avaliable to help when you run into difficulties.

Alternately, you hire a seamstress to do it for you.

My mom could sew anything under the sun. Her arthritis has gotten too bad now. She can't anymore.
She also can't teach worth a damn.
"No, your doing it wrong!"
"OK, how do I do it right?"
You just DO IT."

Really. That's how she said it.
She still has her machine. I don't own one.

Sounds like my Dad trying to teach me to drive, and he's been a teacher for longer than I've been alive. I think it's a relative thing.

I learned to ride a motorcycle from my dad... but he had been a policeman, so he was a good teacher.

The pattern I have is :

That looks pretty cool, but not I think, a beginner's project, although the corset back would make it easier to get a decent fit.
I'd be tempted to leave off the ruffle though.

Yep. No ruffle for me. I may even leave off the sleeves. Or do something else with them. Too hot here for long sleeves.
