Two pots of gold for St Pat's.|
Two full bows, and supernumerary bows
as well! The squally southerly weather has its upside.
Hmm. proves the air quality there is pretty good... you don't get that kind of sharpness to supernumerary bows [and two of them!] with high levels of particulate pollution.
Supernumeraries are an interference effect and occur when you get fine, even raindrops - which tallies with the bright, even rainbow. Small drops are spherical and produce rainbows in any direction, large ones flatten and become disc-like as they fall and only produce vertical sections of rainbow. The fading at the top in the first picture is due entirely to the polariser I used.
I'd expect any particulate to be washed out quite rapidly in a rainstorm such as this.
