Multispot

This is unusual. I haven't seen anything but two-spot ladybugs for ages. Does anybody know what controls the number of spots?

Yahoo Answers explains it all. I gather from that the number of spots has something to do with the environment of the bug, with more dark spots associated with cooler locations.

I used to see a lot of multi-spot ladybirds when I was little. There are many different species of ladybird. We get really big ones here, and sometimes the colours are reversed (red on black) or they are different colours.

I've seen ones with so many black spots they've all joined up, so they look like red on black spotted ones. Just haven't seen one recently.
