I wouldn't have thought you'd consider it Spring until the Equinox. Do you count from the first of the month? (I suppose you must.)

Yes, we do. September = spring. The equinoxes and solstices should fall in the middle of the seasons, no?

No, then they'd be quarter days. I suppose it's just one of those customary things where custom varies a bit. Here in the US we begin the 'official' seasons at the solstices (summer and winter) or the equinoxes (spring or fall). I know the British call the summer solstice midsummer's day, but I thought that was just a colloquialism.

I was speaking a little more loosely than that when I said middle. I wonder when and why our two cultures split on that one

I count from when you can feel the season change. It's very clearly Autumn here, and it happened very quickly last Friday morning.
