Has anyone seen this picture?
Checking my image stats on photobucket, I find that someone on myspace has hotlinked to this image. I can't find exactly where though. I knew when I started putting pics up in public that this was a real possibility, but I find that I'm more pissed off about this than I expected to be. Thing is, I'm not trying to make money out of this and I have given away the odd image just 'cause I've been asked nicely. Is it that hard to ask nicely? I'd probably let them have it for a photocredit.
Eh and its myspace. Ew. Ick.

So I have some options.
Delete the image - and break my own link in my journal.
Put a different image in its place. Evil possibilities are endless, but I would possibly go with something pretty innocuous - a big watermark, or randomise the colours, or something.
Leave it be. What I didn't know didn't hurt me before.

Advice?

Current Mood: annoyed

Option another: contact the management of MySpace and identify the unauthorised use of the image, ask assistance in determining who & notifying them their usage is not authorised.

I have failed to identify the actual miscreant, do you think myspace will help with that?

They may, though I am not positive. At the least, you'll have put them on notice that someone using their service is violating copyright law somewhere. Without specific identification of the particular user, it may require at some point a note from a lawyer. Not sure of the expenses there.

I've been told there are applications which will look for your files, based on embedded data (not specifically embedded watermarks, also other information for exposure, date, etc).

excellent idea on both accounts. Sorry, can't be much help. You could try asking in photographers too.

EXIF Data. That's what I was trying to remember earlier. It's possible to insert your name as the creator of the file; it's also possible to edit this data later and change/delete that. However, takes the right software.

They've hotlinked, so the only place the image (and EXIF) data is actually sitting is in my photobucket. I've Googled myspace looking for the image URL and Google is not finding it. I've contacted Myspace customer service, and recieved a canned and wholly irrelevant reply, so I've tried again using the buzzwords "copyright violation". I've also made my Photobucket private.

I'm still tempted to replace the image with one that consists of black on white block capitals saying "This could be Goatse.cx".

As tempting as it may be I really don't want to bring down an internet shitstorm around this username, as I quite like it and want to keep using it. I've decided to solve half of my issue - the not getting credit half - by watermarking the image. I'd still like to know who's using it, where and what for...
