Mostly because he prefers insects.

Are we bored with birds yet?

In part because once again you provide a demonstration in naming conventions related to geographical location. *G* I think your theory is quite accurate; immigrating ancestors named birds after their closest analogy 'back home'.

Err - no not this time. Starlings were an import, acclimatised for biological pest control purposes.

D'oh!

Starlings around here are more similar to corvids; in fact, I think they're in with that group. All black, no speckling at all. Hence my assumption.

So I guess my theory of names applies in your case, but not in mine. It's nice when everybody can be right :D
