Getting one's ducks in a row

One of my most favourite memories of our holiday to NZ took place on the second-last day and involved ducks. There are quite a few mallards that make their home along the River Avon there. Right across the street from Victoria Square we spotted a crowd gathered by the curb.

A mother duck yelled frantically for help to save her children!

Quite a few people stopped to help. The biggest problem (the ducklings were quite all right) is that they'd fallen into a storm drain, and a Mercedes Sedan was parked on top of the drain grill. A local constable radioed in the license number to determine the place of employment of the owner, who was contacted, and then came out to move his vehicle to help with the rescue.

Somehow, I don't see that happening on this side of the Big Pond.

I know where you're talking about - I lived in Christchurch for about a decade.

Ya think? That's a bit sad.
