Karori sanctuary

This wildlife sanctuary at the edge of Wellington is built on the site of the city's former water supply. There are two dams in this gully, and here I am standing on the older one. It was built in the late 19th C which explains the architectural style of the valve house. The newer dam is further up and is mostly empty, since someone realised that having a large body of water suspended above the capital city and sitting on a faultline was a Really Bad Idea.

It is interesting to see time-related architectural styles in various large construction projects. Visited Hoover Dam across the Colorado River, border between Nevada and Arizona year before last. This project was built during the Great Depression, there is a good deal of Art Deco in the visible items.

And back again... got so involved in thinking about architectural styles.

Schweeeeeeet!

It's always fascinating to me to hear where these pictures take people. I wonder what it would look like if the Karori one were designed now? I'm thinking a very low profile, and possibly submerged as much as possible, rather than this Victorian dove-cote.

I don't suppose you ever read any of the Moomin series of kids books?

Ah.. well one of the principle places in the series is the bathing house. Which looks like this:

You can see why I thought of it.

This is another (of many) instances where you've gotten a little, "Oh!" out of me as a picture resolved. So beautiful.
