Waimakariri

A flying visit to Christchurch today for an emissions workshop. I got noticed as the ministry's fleet model expert, which wasn't as uncomfortable as I would have expected. Hmmm. I may have a bit of imposter syndrome going on here.
I managed to miss today's southerly front by flying over it.

So, that strip running all down the middle? That's a mountain range with snow on it, right? But why the ruler straight edge along the bottom third or so of the range?

No, its a braided river - the
Waimakariri. The straight edge is a stopbank, which is intended to prevent Christchurch being flooded more than once every hundred years or so, IIRC.

OK. Thanks. I'm waiting for Google to load the page you linked to. Presumably it'll load eventually.

That makes sense... I used to go 4WDriving on this bit of river. I wouldn't now - between the price of petrol and my environmental concience.
