Kauri



Kauri can get pretty big. This one isn't yet.  It's maybe  20cm in diameter, and I guess about 15 or 20 years old. They shed their lower branches as they grow - there's a scar from one near the top right of the picture. This makes their trunks smooth round columns, excellent for masts and spars, with the result that there aren't so many left now.
